Anything with high carbon content will work. If you turn the oxygen off on your torch and put a heavy coat of carbon on the mild steel it will surface harden. not as deep as commercial products but it's almost always on hand.

Thank's for the tip, but I have Kasenit and have used it in the past with mixed results. I discovered the hard way that it is possible to overharden a small part to the point of brittleness. I'd like to hear from anyone who has used it to repair rockers.
