Torque Specifications
Use as a general guide only. In most cases, you can use the grade 6 ratings for nut & bolt applications. Be aware of the materials you are fastening into, as this affects the safe torque range. Example: The 1/4" primary bolt that threads into the alloy transmission housing should not be torqued to 10 ft/lbs or you may strip the threads.

Many, many thanks, Dusty!

.....Cotten
PS: I met Stan for a minute at Davenport "back when the internet was new"; I hope he's okay.
PPS: I knew Wilson of American Indian Specialists was a kindred spirit, but still surprised his carburetor instructions are just like mine, and better. (Same technique applies to H-Ds, Folks,... assuming all other things are in order!)

An email describing Indian kickstart arms and gears from Michael Breeding who reproduced Indian parts including kickers at one time.
Michael's opinions:

The 1944 Chiefs were the first to come with 10 tooth kickers with 32 tooth gears, 10/32, for machines with distributor ignition. Splined brake cams and brake levers at the same time. I think the Army was involved with these improvements.
The 10/32 kickers are easier to kick than the earlier 11/28 setups.

1950-51 Chiefs are 80" and have Bonneville cams and Followers with 10/32 kicker setups. Harder to start than 1944-48 74" Chiefs.

1952-53 Chiefs are 80" with Bonneville Cams and standard followers. The heads are milled to increase compression. These hard to start machines finally convinced Indian to make longer kickers with 12 teeth, 12/32. It was simple enough to modify the forging dies for 10/32 kickers, longer arm and 2 more teeth on the same arc, to make 12/32 kickers.

My 1939 Chief 74" Bonneville, stock 11/28, is a little more difficult to kick than my Bonneville 80's with a 12/32 setup.

Michael Breeding
