I've just discovered that the Maxxis DTR1 tyre is road legal in UK and Europe.

Does anyone have any experience of actually using these tyres on tne road, rather than on a show bike?

Looks like a good tire brand but according to the following website not approved for highway use. http://international.maxxis.com/catalog/tire-435-dtr-1

.... They certainly have EU certification, although not US certification. It's on the sidewall.

Whether they are any good on the road, is a different question. I had a BSA once which someone had fitted a dirt-track tyre too, and it was lethal in the wet; but the Dunlop K180 is quite a good road tyre.

Different requirements, different certifying authorities and different ranges.
