Clearance for Rod Race Install

Indian races are 1.690" OD. Rod ID is 1.686". Army manual says press them in and nothing beyond that. .004 seems like quite a squeeze to me although I am not a machinist.

If you fit them 4 negative you will break a race every now and then. I usually fit them 3 negative Don't throw the female rod in a press unless you support the gap. I usually pull them in with a bolt and some washers I machined to fit and stay centered. I found a box of huge over sized races on fleebay so I chuck them up and grind to what ever the minimum cleanup on the rod is.
