S&S HI-4N ignition timing with Kickstart

Hello, greetings to all. I have a 1997 Softail custom 1340cc with S&S super “e” carburetor, drag pipes, kickstart and S&S HI-4N ignition.
I've been trying to tune the ignition time (S&S HI-4N) and have 2 questions:

In the instruction manual it says "Most kick start applications work better with an initial timing of 8 deg BTDC".
- Does this mean I have to advance the ignition 8deg, turning the ignition clockwise?
- If I advance the ignition 8deg, it will also increase the total advance timing by the same amount. If I use curve 9 with 30deg with VOES open, I get a total of 38deg, which I think is too much. I think my engine should have 35deg. Do I have to use the curve that is 27deg with VOES open (27 + 8 = 35deg)? Is the curve 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 …?
Thank you in advance 
