Flywheel thrust washers

I'm trying to identify a flywheel thrust washer for a 1975 XL. Thought you might be able to help. I ordered a set of OEM 6506 washers as being correct for the 1975 engine. Thing is they are too small on the OD. The original washers had a step on the ID. I've tried later thrust washers and they don't fit either (thinking someone had retro fitted a later set of flywheels). I don't have a set of 23972-57A or 23972-72 to measure but I believe they are the same size as the 6506. The 6506 washers are 2-1/8" OD, 1-3/8" ID. The original washers are 2-3/8" OD and 1-3/8" ID and have a step. They have already been turned around and cannot be reused.

Anyone aware of what appears to be a modification to Sportster flywheels?

The "step" is just wear from the bearing cage. You need to purchase the large washers for your wheels, I recommend using steel washers and bearing cages.

Thanks for the reply but the problem is the outside diameter of the flywheel washer. All the OEM flywheel washers are 2-1/8" diameter, the ones I need to fit the recess in the flywheels is 2-3/8" diameter.

Would you happen to know what the outside diameter of that flywheel thrust washer is? I've been led to believe that they are the same as the 6502 but without one to measure I'm totally in the dark. Just to confirm the washer I need is about 2-3/8" OD and is made of bronze.

I can't confirm the year of the flywheels, only the crankcases from the engine number.

Well, I got a set of 23972-57A and 23972-72 just to be on the safe side after a lot of searching. They're rarer than hens teeth in Europe. Managed to get them from Holland in the end. Each of these parts measures 2-3/8" OD with the -72 having the recess. I was led to believe that all the XL flywheels thrust washers were the same OD. I've now a set of all flywheel washers from '57 to '99. Who's a lucky boy!

Anyway, at least I can now get on with balancing the wheels and assembling the bottom end. Thanks for all your replies.
